The International University Commemorates World Obesity Day

Reinforcing its established role in awareness and education, the Libyan International Medical University (LIMU) commemorated World Obesity Day, which fell on Monday, March 4, 2024. This was in partnership and cooperation with the Libyan Medical Society for Nutritional Support (LMSNS) and the Medical Society for Clinical Nutrition and Food Science (MSCNFS). The program included several activities both inside and outside the university.

The scientific day for this event was organized in the main hall, Al-Mujahed Ahmed Al-Sharif Hall, at the International University, and numerous lectures were presented during the day, including:

  • Obesity definition, pathology, and epidemiology
  • Classification of obesity
  • Multi-disciplinary approach in obesity management
  • Bariatric surgery
  • How to educate an obese person
  • Anthropometric measurement

A number of specialized professors, a distinguished group of interested individuals, doctors, and students participated in the scientific day.

The World Obesity Day activities also included the launch of an awareness campaign lasting more than one day to educate the public about the risks of obesity on public health in several public places and clinics, carried out by students. To prepare for this campaign, a workshop was held last Sunday to train students on how to educate the community about obesity in 10 minutes, the correct method for taking anthropometric measurements for obese patients, and other topics related to the awareness process.

World Obesity Day 2024 aims to promote practical solutions to end the global obesity crisis, as well as to drive global efforts to reduce, prevent, and treat obesity. The World Obesity Day was first held in 2015.

The organization of this event comes in fulfillment of the Memorandum of Cooperation signed last February between LIMU and LMSNS, with the aim of enhancing cooperation, partnership, and the exchange of knowledge and expertise, and implementing joint scientific, research, and community projects that benefit society.
