On Tuesday evening, April 22, 2025, the positive and distinguished participation of students and staff from the International University (LIMU) concluded in the National Campaign for the Diagnosis and Census of Autism Spectrum Disorder Cases in Benghazi. The campaign ran for one week (from April 15 to 22) and was organized by the National Center for Autistic Children in cooperation with 360 Voluntary Space, the International University, and the Red Crescent Society.
The volunteer tasks and roles of the International University students in the campaign varied between welcoming children and their parents, data registration, and organizing entry for screening and preliminary diagnosis by specialists. Volunteers worked in two shifts (morning and evening) to ensure the accommodation of the largest possible number of cases.
The team’s work was coordinated by Mr. Mu’ayyad Al-Dawakhi, Community Responsibility Coordinator at the College of Engineering and Information Technology, with the participation of Ms. Islam Al-Najjar, Community Responsibility Coordinator at the College of Social and Human Sciences.
The closing ceremony of the campaign was attended by the Minister of Social Affairs in the Libyan Government, Mr. Mabrouk Ghaith. His Excellency praised the efforts of the campaign organizers, the excellent organization, and the speed and accuracy of execution. He also thanked all parties that provided assistance to this segment of society and commended the volunteer efforts of the International University students.
The Director of the National Center for Autistic Children in the Eastern Region also extended his gratitude to the International University and its volunteer team, noting that the campaign contributed to the registration of dozens of new cases, which will help provide specialized services for them in the future.
At the conclusion, the International University was honored with a certificate of appreciation for its prominent role in the campaign. Mr. Mu’ayyad Al-Dawakhi received a special certificate as the leader of the volunteer team.
Ms. Wahiba Al-Hassi, Director of the Community Responsibility and Sustainability Department at the University, stated that “Our participation in this campaign is in line with the International University’s vision to enhance the role of youth in community service and development.” She added: “We will continue to cooperate with national bodies to support the most vulnerable groups, noting that the experience of International University students’ involvement in this campaign was humanitarian before it was voluntary. We learned from it how to support the families of autistic children and consider their psychological needs.”
